This book provides user guide on how to prepare the remedies of ferns species in
Peninsular Malaysia. In this volume, 50 medicinal ferns species were documented.
These 50 species are among the most popular and locally known ferns species that have
been used in traditional medicine. Some of the species are edible and popular as local
dishes. A few species are also popular as ornamental ferns species. A Guide to Peninsular
Malaysia Medicinal and Edible Ferns includes brief information of the orders, families
and species together with morphological characteristics, and also a glossary of medical
and scientific terms. The usage of ferns as a source of healing and therapeutic agents
has a long history. Traditionally, ferns are mostly used by the rural people who live in
communities surrounded with forest, either to cure illness or as part of their diet. Ferns
and their close relatives, are easy to be found and grow in nearly every corner of the
world. There are many known and also unknown fern species that have economic value
that need to be explored or preserved. Considering the lack of information to support the
traditional claims of medicinal ferns, the publication of this book is hoped to provide
useful information for community and scientific researchers.
